Fasting While Pregnant with GDM
Reviewed by CDE Mehandi Sharma · Updated
Fasting matters a great deal in many Indian families, and a GDM pregnancy is the situation where it needs the most careful thought.
Extended fasting is generally advised against in a GDM pregnancy, for reasons that pull in two directions at once.
Your baby needs a steady glucose supply, and long gaps without food work against that. Meanwhile the fast-then-feast pattern — many hours without eating followed by a large, often sweet meal — produces exactly the sharp glucose swings that GDM management exists to prevent. Dehydration is a further concern in Indian heat.
And if you are on insulin, going without food while continuing it can cause low blood sugar, which is a genuine risk to you.
So this is a conversation to have with your obstetrician before the fast, not on the morning of it.
Every major tradition that includes fasting also makes allowance for pregnancy, illness, and nursing. Many families are unaware of this, and a religious leader will usually confirm it, which can help considerably where relatives are applying pressure.
Safer ways to observe exist: eating simple, satvik or restricted foods rather than not eating at all; shortening the fast; or taking on a different observance for that day. Those preserve the meaning without the risk.
