Your Target Ranges in LADA

Reviewed by CDE Mehandi Sharma · Updated

The targets themselves are the same ones used across adult diabetes.

Common targets for adults
WhenTarget
Before meals80 to 130 mg/dL
About 2 hours after eatingBelow 180 mg/dL
HbA1cBelow 7%

HbA1c is your average blood sugar over roughly the past three months. It is usually checked every six months when you are in range, and every three months when treatment has changed or you are above target.

What changes in LADA is the balance behind those numbers, and it changes in two stages.

While you are on tablets that do not cause lows, tight control carries little risk, and there is a good argument for aiming firmly at target — high blood sugar is itself hard on struggling beta cells.

Once insulin or a sulfonylurea is part of your treatment, low blood sugar becomes possible, and the calculation shifts. A target that looks excellent on paper but produces a low every few days is not a good target. Your doctor may set your numbers a little higher if you live alone, drive for a living, or have had a severe low.

Because that transition happens gradually, your targets are worth revisiting at each review rather than being set once. Monitoring needs change as LADA progresses.
