Using a Glucometer with Purpose

Reviewed by CDE Mehandi Sharma · Updated

If your subtype and treatment mean you do test at home, the technique matters and so does the reason for each reading.

Technique. Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them first — this is the commonest cause of a falsely high reading, and fruit or sweet residue on a fingertip can distort a result badly. Use the side of the fingertip rather than the centre, and rotate fingers. Keep strips tightly closed and away from heat and humidity, which matters in Indian conditions.

Purpose. Each reading should answer something. A paired check before a meal and two hours after tells you what that meal does — useful in HNF1A and HNF4A-MODY, where the post-meal rise is the characteristic problem. A check when you feel unwell confirms or excludes a low. A random reading with no question behind it teaches very little.

Record context. The number plus what you ate, what you did, and your medicine timing is what lets a pattern emerge. A bare column of numbers does not.

And know when to stop. If you have untreated GCK-MODY, or you find yourself testing repeatedly hoping for a better number, that is worth raising. Testing without a decision attached is a reasonable thing to reduce, and in this category it is often the right advice.
