Associated Conditions to Watch For

Some conditions travel alongside diabetes in childhood, and they are worth knowing about because each one is easy to miss and easy to treat once found.

Thyroid problems. An underactive thyroid is common in children with diabetes. Among Indian children studied, hypothyroidism was found in 26.1% of girls and 4.2% of boys. The symptoms — tiredness, weight change, feeling cold, slow growth — are easily attributed to diabetes or to ordinary childhood, and a simple blood test settles it.

Coeliac disease. Here gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. In one group of Indian children with diabetes, coeliac disease was found in 11.1%. It matters twice over: it affects growth and nutrition, and it makes blood sugar erratic because a damaged intestine absorbs food unpredictably. Watch for poor growth, bloating, loose stools, or unexplained anaemia.

Vitamin D deficiency. It is very common in Indian children with diabetes — reported in 58% of newly diagnosed children against 32% of others — and it affects bone health and growth.

There is one point specific to neonatal diabetes. Certain genetic causes come as part of a wider syndrome affecting bones, liver or the immune system. If your child's report named such a gene, ask which additional checks belong in their schedule — they will not be the standard ones.
