Understanding the mechanism makes every piece of prediabetes advice make sense, so it is worth two minutes.
Insulin is a hormone your pancreas makes. Think of it as a key that unlocks your cells so glucose — sugar from your food — can get in and be used for energy.
In insulin resistance, the locks get stiff. Your muscle, fat and liver cells stop responding to insulin the way they should. The same amount of insulin no longer opens the same number of doors.
Your pancreas notices glucose staying high and responds by making more insulin, forcing those stiff locks open. This works. Your blood sugar stays normal, you feel entirely fine, and a routine test shows nothing. That stage can last years.
Prediabetes is the point where the compensation starts falling short. Your pancreas is still producing extra insulin, but no longer quite enough, so glucose begins to creep above the normal range.
This explains why activity helps so directly: working muscle takes up glucose and becomes more insulin-sensitive, which reduces the demand on your pancreas.
And it explains why acting now matters. The insulin-producing cells still have reserve. That reserve is what you are protecting.
