What to Ask at Your Next Check-up
Reviewed by CDE Mehandi Sharma · Updated
Prediabetes has a structural problem: nobody owns your follow-up. There is no clinic for it, no specialist, and no appointment automatically booked. If you do not drive it, nothing happens until it becomes diabetes.
So treat your next general check-up as your prediabetes review, and go in with a list.
What to ask for:
- A fasting glucose or HbA1c, yearly from your diagnosis.
- Blood pressure, at every visit — cardiovascular risk rises at this stage.
- A lipid panel, for cholesterol and triglycerides.
- Liver tests if fatty liver has been mentioned, and thyroid or PCOS review if relevant.
- A discussion of whether metformin applies to you, if you are higher risk.
What to bring: your previous reports so the numbers can be compared, your current waist measurement, and a rough account of what you have actually changed since last time.
That last item matters more than it sounds. "I have been walking after dinner most days for six months and my waist is down 4 cm" gives a doctor something to work with. "I have been trying to be careful" does not.
And ask directly what your own target is, and by when. A number to aim at beats general advice to be careful.
